Child sex trafficking in the US is increasingly moving onto the internet. Online classifieds like Backpage.com are now a primary venue for traffickers to sell sex with minors and for buyers to purchase sex with these children. This is domestic minor sex trafficking. Online classifieds that advertise commercial sex acts provide anonymity and accessibility to individuals looking for commercial sex and the victims are very often trafficked youth. Shared Hope International has joined policy, faith and NGO leaders in national advocacy efforts to hold online classifieds liable for their role in facilitating sex trafficking through advertising.
Stop the inJuSTice: Online Campaign
Stop the inJuSTice: Online is a campaign to support the enactment of H.R. 1865, Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act, and S.B. 1693, the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act. Websites that advertise commercial sex acts provide anonymity and endless accessibility to sex trafficking and CSEC offenders, including the buyers and traffickers themselves. Until now, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) has shielded interactive computer service providers from liability, further incentivizing bad actors and preventing victims from accessing vital relief, including restitution. H.R. 1865 and S.B. 1693 seek to amend Section 230 of the CDA for the purpose of preventing the online facilitation of sex trafficking, while ensuring justice for victims and culpability for offenders.
